Audio version describes the pictures shown. Philip seldom does anything to displease her so I don't fully understand the motivation behind her harsh treatment of him other than she is simply turned on by her own sadism. It is a good book, not as good as his “Moonstone” and “Lady in White,” or even “The Hunted Hotel,” all of which are superb dramas that begin with unusual episodes, but it is still good and an enjoyment to read. Good. Those wishing for a more straightforward narrative will be disappointed but anyone wanting a rollercoaster of almost Lovecraftian murk will be very fondly attached to this novel.
In summary, this is a twisted and dark tragic tale of one important life as it makes its transition into the world. Otherwise, I thought that this was a pretty good
