"You will enter A Century of Progress for the first time perhaps like an explorer-curious and eager-penetrating an amazingly rumored domain in search of treasure."-Official Guide Book to the Fair, 1933One century after Chicago's incorporation, the city hosted the 1933 World's Fair, which was so successful it was held over for 1934. Aptly named "A Century of Progress," the fair confirmed Chicago's emergence as a major American city. Like the phoenix from the ashes, Chicago emerged from its devastating fire of 1871 as one of the most architecturally significant and aesthetically inviting cities in the world. On 424 lakeside acres located on Chicago's near south side, the Fair brought together innovators and inventors from around the world. Chicagoans hosted visitors from all corners of the globe, commemorating human progress, despite the Great Depression that was devastating the nation's economy.
Through postcards and ephemera from the Century of Progress World's Fair, this book celebrates the incredible advancements made by industry and the world famous hospitality of the great host city. Author Samantha Gleisten, a writer, researcher, and editor, has the pleasure of calling Chicago "home."

Years ago he wrote the authors with corrections. (Copyright © by Roy R. I accept his book as an accurate representation of both his observations and views, and for that, and for his professionalism, it merits the four stars. Even in this hard time in America the fair was a place to go and forget your troubles for a day or two for millions of people. Patricia WAS framed for the Hibernia bank robbery, first by the SLA, then (as evidence later showed) by the USA -- that's not Bailey's fault. After a stay in Urga (the modern Ulan Batar, capital city of modern Mongolia),that is maybe the book's most interesting part because of the description of the temples and cerimonies that do not exist anymore, Andrews and his wife decide to spend some time as the nomads do on horse back. It is stunning! I never tire of looking through the pages of beautiful photos. Whilst being essentially an art book, it deals with its subject matter in a lively mannner which could well form the basis of a movie
